Misleading Information about PVC 636 and ABS Furnace Exhaust Venting
Misleading Information about PVC 636 and ABS furnace exhaust venting
we believe it is important to address the growing trend in some water heater companies and HVAC companies that are misleading their potential customers, just to make a sale.
This is an issue that is more prevalent with door to door sales representatives, from the 3 major water tank rental companies in Ontario. These representatives will typically come to your door at very inconvenient time and will allude to a claim that they are an authority in the gas industry; they come to your door, to make sure that your water heater and furnace are up to code.
Many people will allow these people to come into their homes and inspect their water tank or furnace
and the sales representative will point out the Black ABS venting, stating that it is no longer up to code. Many of these people do not know much about the codes that govern the gas industry and will do whatever is necessary to keep their home up to code. So why did the Black ABS become outlawed? Black ABS was designed initially for plumbers, but was adapted for use into the HVAC trade, with the invention of high efficient gas appliances.
Over 15 to 20 years of use, the ABS vent began to dry out and it would become very brittle and prone to cracking, which would leak Carbon Monoxide (CO) into homes. This became a huge problem with water heaters, since they come on, on a daily basis; the ABS venting would heat and cool so frequently, as a result.
Manufacturers began working on creating a new styled of venting and one of them was the 636 venting; it was designed to last through high temperatures. In 2008, 636 venting became the industry standard in Ontario and became the new code, for installations of new appliances.
So when someone tells you that the laws have changed, they are not lying, they are telling you the truth. BUT they are lying when they tell you that you have to change the venting.
The code governing the 636 venting applies to new installations; black ABS venting only needs replacing, if it is damaged or causing an immediate hazard in a home. If no immediate hazard is present, the black ABS venting does not require replacing until it presents a hazard. When or if your old ABS venting cracks or present an immediate hazard, the venting will need replacing, not the whole unit. A lot of these companies and other HVAC companies will convince you that it will be better if you replace the hole unit, rather than just the venting.
I would recommend to anyone that if they ever have any HVAC company or Water Heater company tell you that your old AB venting needs replacing (even if it is not damaged), ask them to show you this code in their code book. If they do not show you anything, contact TSSA and they will give you the correct answer, as they are the authority for the gas trade.
to protect the unsuspecting consumer from unscrupulous business operators and to keep this industry honest!

What Does OEM Mean For HVAC Parts?
The term OEM comes from "Original Equipment Manufacturer," This is impotent for equipment that you buy for your Furnace and, or AC unit.
If, you where to buy and non - OEM part this could cause damage to your equipment, and loss of warranty coverage.
Although, it should be pointed out it's less of a problem for HVAC parts. Vs, your car replacement parts where there is so Meany different knock off.
HVAC aftermarket parts are made by a few manufacturer who at large have the permission from the Brand name manufacturer to build the parts. Fasco, being one of them.
Most, Furnace use Fasco motors over the brand name part. So, for example if your Lennox inducer motor 68K21 was broken chance are that the HVAC company you hire to change out that part will end up using the Fasco A163 motor. Vs the Brand name part. Why? it's cheaper. Much Cheaper then the Lennox motor.

What sets Five Seasons Media Air Cleaners above all the other disposable media filter on the market?
What sets Five Seasons Media Air Cleaners above all the other disposable media filters on the market?
Five Seasons MERV ratings are based on 492 feet/minute, unlike most competitor products which show high MERV ratings, but their tests are done at 300 feet/minute, which is not representative of the air flow of a residential HVAC system.
Five Seasons filters contain more media material than other filters on the market. More surface area means more collection area, longer filter life and lower static pressure. Our typical filter life is one year. (Big Box Store filters must be replaced 2-3 times per year. Read the fine print on the filter.) Our competitors also achieve high MERV ratings by using less pleats, which means higher static pressure and shorter filter life. Also, the deeper the pleat, the lower the static pressure. This is why we have an odd size of 5¼ inches wide.
Five Seasons filters have an exact fit with the cabinet. They do not contain foam, sponge or fiberglass filler. This means all the air is forced through the filter and not through the filler material. Remember, air always takes the path of least resistance.
Five Seasons filters do not contain any cellulose. This is very important because cellulose sustains mold growth. Cellulose fibers are held together by glue. People with Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS) - about 8% of the population - can detect the glue vapors, which can make them very sick. People with MCS have no problem with our filters.
Our filters do not need anti-bacterial spray on them because they do not allow bacteria to breed due to the content of the fibers. Anti-bacterial and Microban filters should never be used in a home with small children -- it's like spraying insecticide in your duct work.
Five Seasons filter material is constructed of continuous hydrophobic polyolefin fibers that will not shred or absorb moisture. The media's unique design features a structured density gradient with an electret charge for higher initial and sustained efficiency. The media is supported by an open steel mesh and enclosed by a high wet-strength beverage board.
Five Seasons filters have minimal printing on the casing. This is very important because as a filter manufacturer we do not want to add ink Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC's) to something that is supposed to be filtering the air. We have looked at the replacement filters on the market, and they are using 4-color ink with high off gassing capabilities.
Five Seasons filters are Made in Canada from raw materials manufactured in the USA, so we always have control of the quality and delivery. Our filters are not sitting weeks in containers crossing oceans or shipyards where moisture is a problem.

Where can I buy HVAC Parts/Why can't I buy HVAC Parts in Canada?
There really is not much of a difference between a car and your furnace.
If you are knowledgeable and have the mechanical know-how to work on your car, then chances are, you can work on your furnace too!
The problem is...there are not many companies in Ontario that are willing to sell you the parts. At www.TorontoFurnaceFilters.ca we are one of the few that will.
Why is this?
There are many reasons why, but two reasons stand out.
Firstly, most HVAC companies, technicians and small contractors do not know their own code book when it comes to selling HVAC parts (the regulations for the HVAC trade); many large companies seem to focus on the parts of the code book that make them money. Once a technician is out of school, they seem to forget about the first 50 pages in the Gas Code Book. lots of contractor/Tech will tell their customers that it is illegal for them to sell an HVAC part directly to a customer; we to have had some of our tech tell customers this when they worked for other HVAC companies.)
This is 100% False. In ON Reg. 212/01, it states nowhere that a contractor or HVAC company is not permitted to sell a customer HVAC parts.
If you are still a little hesitant, we emailed TSSA (Technical Standards & Safety Authority) directly to ask them this question.
Asked, "Can our company sell HVAC equipment to customers?"
The response was direct and to the point, "ON Reg. 212/01 does not prohibit an individual or a company from "selling" products of this nature"
TSSA
To be fair to the HVAC companies out there, I am not surprised that most believe that selling parts directly to the customer is illegal. The reason for this is, if you wanted to purchase parts directly from an HVAC part manufacturer, or a dealer, and went to their location, they would tell you that they could not sell you the parts, unless you could provide proof that you are a contractor.
So many HVAC companies continue to carry this policy on to their customers, thinking that this must be the law, but as you can see above, it is not.
Secondly, HVAC companies know that there are people that can change out parts themselves. For example: to change a venter blower it could take 15 minutes, for an experience person, and maybe up to an hour, for someone who is inexperienced. If you are mechanically inclined, this is definitely something that you could complete yourself, as a venter blower consists of 4 bolts and a connection terminal, for the power.
HVAC companies are uncomfortable with the thought of this and get very defensive when a customers tells them that they can change the part, by themselves. Why does it make them uncomfortable? It means that they are not making as much money. A service call could cost $300 and if they sell a customer the part directly, they would only make $50; many HVAC companies do not think it is worth their time or effort to sell you the part if all there going to make is $50.00.
Despite many HVAC companies that do not sell customers parts directly, or will mislead you on weather or not it's even worth changing the part, rather than replace the furnace. Which lots of HVAC companies will try to do, in order for you to think that you need to replace the furnace rather then fixes the furnace. We here at www.TorontoFurnaceFilters.ca believe in trusting your judgment.
